CCUS explained: all about carbon capture, utilisation and storage
Carbon capture, utilisation and storage is an essential way of reducing carbon emissions as we face up to the climate emergency and seek to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

To support you as effectively as possible and offer innovative ways of reducing your facilities’ carbon emissions, we are anticipating regulatory developments* by exploring carbon capture and storage.
We are planning to invest several tens of millions of euros in research and development by 2027 in order to develop CCUS solutions that can be deployed in waste and wastewater treatment facilities.
Capturing CO2
Capturing CO2 is the first part of the CCUS process. We analyse and compare various CO2 capture solutions in order to advise on the technologies best suited to each kind of project. We identify the right partners and integrate the carbon capture process as efficiently as possible into existing facilities.
Utilising CO2
We are exploring solutions to turn the captured CO2 into high-value products, thereby creating a circular economy. We assess various innovative ways of recycling CO2, for instance to help decarbonise transport through the production of alternative low-carbon fuels (eFuels) and to develop other innovative uses (conversion into chemicals, mineralisation, etc.).
Storing CO2
Once captured, the CO2 can also be stored safely for the long term. We assess geological storage solutions in which CO2 is injected into geological reservoirs, where it will remain for a very long period, i.e. stored in depleted gas reservoirs or dissolved in deep confined aquifers.
* Regulations regarding CO2 of fossil origin are changing, and facilities that produce energy from non-hazardous waste may be included in the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) between 2028 and 2031. The impact study that will determine whether these facilities are included in the ETS is due to be submitted by the European Commission by July 2026.
