The Mission
Meeting the drinking water requirements for a huge city like Mumbai is, of course, a major challenge. Nonetheless, SUEZ has been supporting the local authority for the last 35 years, designed and built several state-of-the-art water treatment plants with innovative technologies that could adapt to the local conditions and catered to ever-growing needs of the customers.
These water treatment facilities at Bhandup and Panjrapur, with a cumulative capacity of 3355 MLD, are responsible for supplying quality potable water for the residents of the entire city.
Since SUEZ is also in-charge of operation of these plants, the mission has also been to offer excellent O&M services that extend the lifecycle of these assets with minimal cost, delivering the guaranteed results consistently and continuously.
Our Solutions
In 1981, SUEZ completed the first drinking water filtration plant of 1,910 MLD at Bhandup, which was then considered to be Asia’s largest facility. The plant mainly includes 72 Aquazur V sand filters, 151 m2 each, arranged in four parallel streams. Each stream was provided with its own facilities for air-scour, backwash, and control.
The hydraulics of the plant was based on the declining rate operation; the filters were not provided with level controllers, as usual. The plant was complemented by chemical dosages and by instrumentation.
To meet population and urban developments, MCGM awarded SUEZ another contract for the construction of a new drinking water treatment plant of 900 MLD capacity. For this plant, SUEZ chose to use its own filtration and decantation technologies (Aquazur V and Pulsatube), which had proven their worth around the world.
Commissioned in 2014, this 900 MLD state-of-the-art plant is fully automated water treatment plant with recycling facilities for recirculation of filter back wash water and desludge water from settlers by removing sludge Commissioned in 2014, this 900 MLD state-of-the-art plant is fully automated water treatment plant with recycling facilities for recirculation of filter back wash water and desludge water from settlers by removing sludge.
The Result
These treatment plants operate 24 X 7, 365 days a year and the water continuously moves from one stage of treatment process to another, delivering the guaranteed results consistently and continuously. The treated water turbidity is being maintained at <0.3NTU, much lower than the contractual requirement of <0.5NTU. The plant is known for Zero wastage as it has a facility of treating and recycling of wash water to make use of every drop of water.
